Islamic Handmade Prayer Tasbeeh
The traditional Muslim call to prayer, Tawhid, is performed by a string of prayer tasbeeh connected by hand or tongue. It is repeated over again, for the same amount of time. The beads are made from different materials and come in a variety of colours. They are usually carried in a handbag which has an interlocking design. The bag is then put on a raised platform called a minbar (standing place in Islamic law).
The basic intention of the prayer
tasbeeh ceremony is to praise Allah and ask him for forgiveness for
your sins. The repetition of the words, tasbih, is then followed by a
supplication that is repeated in the mind and hearts of believers. When you go
to sit in front of your prayer tasbeeh, your prayer mat or carpet is first
brought into view. In some traditions, the prayer tasbih ritual is started with
the recitation of verses of the Qur'an.
Two prayer beads are then placed on the ends of the
prayer mat; each is then clasped by a piece of cloth or prayer thread. After
this, a prayer can be performed by interlocking the beads. Two more beads are
then placed in a necklace made of thread and fabric. These beads are then
clasped by another cloth or prayer thread and the prayer is repeated.
There are many reasons why people perform a prayer
tasbeeh. Sometimes it is done as part of a congregational prayer, when a group
of people pray together. The leader of the prayer bazaar will lead the prayer,
say a few lines to start the prayer and finish with tasbih. Other times it is
just a family tradition and the whole family does it. If you have a mosque
nearby, you could easily organize a prayer tazar for a local group.
During a tasbih ceremony, you would kneel on the prayer
mat while the imam stands a few feet away holding the prayer beads and a prayer
mat. The imam then places the prayer beads on the prayer mat and begins to
recite a Qur’an. The leader then asks everyone to stand so that all of them can
see the prayer starting. When finished, they all bow their heads and release a
prayerful supplication to Allah.
The most common way of praying tasbih is with the leader reciting a Qur’an followed by other beads of prayer cloth being placed around his neck. There are many imams who use a silk scarf to hold the prayer beads before and after the recitation of the ups. Some however prefer the beads held in their hands rather than the prayer cloth. Either way, prayer tasbih ceremonies are not restricted to Muslims but are now being conducted by people of different religions.
There are two types of prayer tasbeeh, the Laylites and
the Rakshabandhan. A Laylites prayer tasbih usually takes place outdoors where
the congregation gathers to perform the tasbih. This is mostly when there is no
chance of rain so the ceremony can take place at night. During a prayer tasbeeh,
the leader leads a prayer in front of the congregation and places the prayer
mat on the ground before kneeling on it. After making some calls to God, the prayer cloth, prayer beads and other necessary items before
placing them over the tasbih body.
The leader recites a few lines from the Qur’an before
putting his prayer
tasbeeh on the ground. Then, all the people present in the gathering
bow down before the imam, who then performs the tasbih, praising God. The
leader then collects the prayer beads and puts them in a separate bag and then
returns them to the follower. After this, everyone again stands or sits in
front of the imam so that the tasbih can be repeated once again.
